Republican presidential candidate Texas Gov. Rick Perry, speaks at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition presidential candidate forum, in Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011.
Texas Governor Rick Perry is making headlines for so-called “birther” comments he made during an interview with Parade Magazine. Originally, Perry said he had no reason to think that President Obama was not born in the United States. However, when pushed further, the Texas Governor said he could not be sure that the President’s long-form birth certificate was real. Parade noted that the Governor had seen the birth certificate—to which Perry responded, “I don’t know, have I?” Perry mentioned that the President’s citizenship came up during a recent dinner with Donald Trump, where the real estate mogul said he does not believe the certificate is in fact authentic. Perry’s comments come after a critical weekend for the Republican presidential field to win over social conservatives in Iowa. All major candidates except Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman campaigned for the evangelical vote at the Faith and Freedom dinner Saturday night in Des Moines.
