It seems as though Mitt Romney's performance at last week's first presidential debate has helped tighten the race against the president, a new Gallup daily tracking poll released today shows.
Based on three days of calling after the debate, President Obama and Mitt Romney are both tied at 47 percent among registered voters. The poll also shows (in the graphic above) that prior to the debate, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, the president was leading Romney 50 to 45 percent.
Gallup explains that Obama still holds a 3-point lead based on their 7-day averages:
Gallup typically reports voter presidential preferences in seven-day rolling averages; the latest such average as of Saturday interviewing shows Obama with an average three-point edge, 49% to 46%, among registered voters. This Sept. 30-Oct. 6 field period includes three days before the Oct. 3 debate, the night of the debate itself, and three days after the debate.

Please don't call these sideshows debates. There's no discussion of the issues. Fingerpointing contest, like a bunch of high school kids deciding for whom to vote for prom queen.
