Perhaps you tuned into Way Too Early yesterday morning and found a certain Washington Post columnist and MSNBC regular filling in for Willie while he's away on Olympics duty.
If you caught the ending, you saw this columnist make a certain admission (watch above), and if you didn't catch the ending, the short of it is he likes to crank up the tunes when he guest hosts Way Too Early.
Let's have him explain.
By Jonathan Capehart
I cannot tell a lie. I love a good song in the morning. Something that gets my legs moving, my mind whirring and my day off to a good starts. Usually, this happens in the privacy of my own home. But as you saw yesterday, and as the WTE crew has known for a while now, I like to shake my groove thing before the show.
You saw and heard me get down to “Love Sensation” by Loletta Holloway.
Other songs playing Wednesday were “In the Bush” by Musique and “Push it” by Salt-n-Pepa.
But in case you're wondering what other songs have perked me up in the pre-dawn hours, here are some that come to mind: “Cherchez La Femme” by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, “Boogie Wonderland” by Earth, Wind and Fire, “Any Love” by Rufus and Chaka Khan, “Enough is Enough” by Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand, “Street Life” by Randy Crawford and “Last Dance” by Donna Summer.
These are great songs with beats you can dance to.
But for me they are also very nostalgic. They take me back to backyard barbeques with family. You knew a song was good when the old folks shimmied in their lawn chairs or one yelled, “Ooh, that’s my song!” while skittering across the grass to get another beer or piece of chicken.
Those memories fill me with joy. Something that was on vivid display yesterday.

I LOVE Jonathan. He's so smooth, cool, collected with an overall likeability but a no nonsense personality that just will not let someone blatantly lie on the air w/out confronting the person with the facts. I wish he had his own show. Find a niche for him MSNBC! Poised, intelligent, kind yet persistent...what more could we ask for. Shake your groove thang shake your groove thang yeah yeah...show 'em how ya do it now! xxoo
Jonathan, you listed some songs above, but why don't you come up with a more complete list of "Jonathan's fav dance tracks?" Then, cycle through them on future WTE dates?
Love your list above. Many are my favs, too. Why don't you publish a more complete list of "Jonathan's fav dance tracks?" Then cycle through them on future WTE stints.
Don't forget "Word Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and anything by the Ohio Players or Kool and the Gang.
Love that you played Musique- In the Bush. It's on the FCC Naughty list and can't be played on-air!
Jonathan..you are my mirror face ......only diference is i use a hairbrush to sing into. Love it.
